MORNING BISHOP (DILWORTH)

Was a gift to this world. She was a devoted, caring and loving wife to Milton McKinney Dilworth, Jr. (who loved and adored her), protective, loving  and kind mother to her seven children of which McKenya Dilworth Smith is the youngest. BISHOP was also a visionary who created The Morning Bishop Theatre Playhouse, Inc. and tirelessly worked to ensure that the arts and culture remained vibrant and essential in the city of Gary, a place she adopted and affectionately called her “new hometown”. BISHOP was an activist for the voiceless, a friend to the friendless and a beacon of light to those in darkness and used the transformative power of the arts to assist society’s footstools and so-called throw-aways. We celebrate her hard work, her tenacity, her audacity to create and keep space for the arts, for activism, for education. In this campus, she walked, learned and fought to become the best version of herself; graduating with honors in 1980 with a proud husband, six pre- and teens at home and a five year at her side. Creating the theatre was her gift to the world and it continues and will as long as God allows me to breathe His good air. ASE! Happy 40th Mommie!
